Description

Premium Horticultural Grade Perlite by OC Farms — Ultra Lightweight, High Aeration, Excellent Drainage

OC Farms Perlite is a premium horticultural grade soil amendment made from a naturally occurring volcanic mineral expanded at high temperature heat to create lightweight, porous white particles. It improves soil aeration, enhances drainage and supports healthy root growth — making it an essential ingredient for potting mixes, hydroponics and any garden where drainage and aeration matter. ISO certified. More Air, Better Roots, Stronger Plants.

What is Perlite? Perlite is formed from volcanic glass that is heated to over 900°C causing it to expand up to 20 times its original size — similar to popcorn. The result is ultra-lightweight, sterile, white porous particles that dramatically improve soil drainage and aeration without adding weight. It is pH neutral, sterile, non-toxic and completely safe for all plants including edible crops and seedlings.

Key Benefits

  • Improves soil aeration — roots get the oxygen they need to grow strong
  • Prevents waterlogging and root rot — excess water drains freely
  • Promotes strong root development through improved oxygen availability
  • Ideal for hydroponics and potting mixes
  • Ultra lightweight — perfect for terrace and balcony gardens
  • Sterile and pH neutral — safe for seedlings and sensitive plants
  • Reusable — can be cleaned and used multiple times
  • ISO certified premium horticultural grade quality

How To Use

For Pots and Containers:

  • Add 1-2 handfuls every 15 days and mix lightly into soil
  • Or mix 20-30% perlite into your potting mix at the time of potting

For Garden Beds:

  • Apply 1-2 kg per square meter
  • Mix into the topsoil before planting for improved drainage

For Seedlings:

  • Mix with potting soil before planting
  • Recommended ratio: 20-30% perlite in seed starting mix
  • Prevents damping off and improves germination rates

For Hydroponics:

  • Use pure perlite as a standalone growing medium
  • Or mix with cocopeat in a 50:50 ratio for semi-hydroponic systems

For Succulents and Cacti:

  • Mix 40-50% perlite with regular potting mix
  • Ensures fast drainage that succulents and cacti need to thrive

Dosage Guide

Application Ratio Notes
General potting mix 20-30% of total mix Mix at time of potting
Seed starting mix 20-30% with cocopeat Improves germination
Succulents and cacti 40-50% of total mix Fast drainage essential
Garden beds 1-2 kg per sq. meter Mix into topsoil
Hydroponics 100% or 50:50 with cocopeat Rinse before use
Heavy clay soil Up to 30% Breaks compaction

Best Uses For

  • Improving drainage in any potting mix
  • Seed germination and seedling nursery
  • Growing succulents, cacti and drought-tolerant plants
  • Hydroponic and semi-hydroponic systems
  • Propagating stem cuttings
  • Lightening heavy clay garden soil
  • Terrace and balcony container gardening
  • Indoor plant potting mixes

Perlite vs Vermiculite — Which Should You Use? Both are volcanic minerals but work differently. Perlite drains quickly making it better for succulents, cacti, orchids and plants prone to root rot. Vermiculite retains more moisture making it better for moisture-loving plants and seedlings. For most plants the best results come from combining both — use OC Farms Perlite and OC Farms Vermiculite together in your potting mix for the perfect balance of drainage and moisture retention.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a cool, dry place
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture
  • Best before 12 months from date of manufacture

Frequently Asked Questions

Is perlite safe for growing vegetables and edible plants? Yes — perlite is completely natural, sterile and pH neutral. It is widely used in organic vegetable growing and hydroponics and is safe for all edible crops.

Why is perlite white? The white colour comes from the high-temperature expansion process that converts the dark volcanic glass into lightweight white porous particles. The colour is natural and not due to any bleaching or chemical treatment.

Can I reuse perlite? Yes — perlite can be reused multiple times. Rinse with clean water and optionally soak in a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution to sterilise between uses.

How much perlite do I need for a 10 inch pot? For a 10 inch pot using a 25% perlite ratio you will need approximately 750 grams to 1 kg of perlite mixed with the rest of your potting medium.

Can I use perlite alone as a growing medium? Yes — perlite can be used as a standalone growing medium in hydroponic systems. However for soil-based growing it works best mixed with other organic matter like cocopeat and vermicompost.

Is OC Farms Perlite suitable for orchids? Absolutely — orchids love excellent aeration and drainage. Mix OC Farms Perlite with orchid bark for an ideal orchid growing medium.

What is the difference between OC Farms Perlite and regular perlite? OC Farms supplies premium horticultural grade perlite — processed specifically for plant use with consistent granule size, low dust and safe EC levels for sensitive plants and seedlings.
